Nursing Schools in Alaska
Alaska is the largest state in the U.S. but it also has the lowest population density with only 1.2 persons per square mile. However, the city of Anchorage alone is host to over 350,000 people and several other cities are host to more than 100,000 people. Alaska is expected to have a growth of 33% between 2000 and 2020. The number of residents over the age of 65 is expected to grow by an astounding 120% between 2000 and 2020! This massive increase in elderly population means that Alaska is facing a huge nursing shortage over the next several years.
Due to the nursing shortage, many nurses are being required to work overtime shifts. This leads to tired and less proficient nurses to take care of patient healthcare needs. Due to the dangers this can pose to both the nurses and the patients, Alaska is in the process of passing the HB 50 Bill that prohibits mandatory overtime for working nurses. As of June 2010, this bill has passed the Alaska Legislators and is currently headed for the Governor’s approval. Alaska is one of 15 states that have either laws or regulations in place to restrict mandatory overtime.
More nurses are needed in Alaska to help alleviate the stresses that face current healthcare workers. As the HB 50 bill passes through, more nurses will be in great demand to help cover the overtime that is no longer being forced on current nurses.
Nurses in Alaska are very well compensated, and due to the shortage a graduate has numerous job opportunities available to them. The mean hourly wage for RN’s in Alaska in 2009 was $36.04. That is higher than average for most states. LPN/LVN’s earned a mean hourly wage of $22.36.
