Health Administration Training - The business side of managing health care

Health Administrator

As with any work environment, health care systems just simply could not operate without key individuals managing them. Those individuals are categorized as Health Care Administrators, and their role is one that is just as important as the doctors and nurses working the front lines of health care.

Health Care Administrators handle all types of management roles within any health system. Working at nearly every level, they have always been referred to as the “hidden” community within health care, but in recent years, Healthcare Admins have been brought to the forefront of modern medicine. The task of managing the costs of healthcare, the availability of quality care, and the quality assurance aspects of healthcare have forced Healthcare Administrators into the public eye. These individuals have taken active roles with the public, and have proven to be one of the key factors in promoting quality healthcare and helping the nation fight for better insurance coverage for its citizens.

Salaries for Health Care Administrators

Pay scales for those working in healthcare administration vary widely. Such things as training level, size of the workplace facility, and scope of the job all play a role in determining the pay rates for Health Administrators. Typically, the more training and high education level one receives, the rate of pay also follows. Also, larger facilities in places like capitol cities and government funded jobs also tend to pay higher.

According to The Bureau of Labor and Statistics, in May of 2008 the average pay for a health Administrator in a facility with less than 6 physicians working in it was over $80,000 annually. That amount increases substantially for those working in larger facilities, and an Administrator working in a place such as a hospital that employs more than 25 physicians earned well over $115,000 annually.

If working in a smaller facility is what you prefer, such as a small physician’s office, you can expect to earn an average pay of $50,000 to $60,000. That information comes from a survey completed by Professional Association of Health Care Office Management in 2009. Although the rates of pay for Health Administrators may seem sufficient already, those rates are expected to rise each year. As an increasing demand for those trained individuals becomes more prevalent and more duties are added to the employee’s workload, the pay scale is expected to be raised accordingly.

Health Administrator Education

Healthcare Admin training comes from a wide range of institutions. Programs vary from small certificate programs, to fully fledged degree programs. There are even certificate programs available as a specialization course added on to an existing nursing program. Students can choose to complete simple certificate entry level programs, and can also choose to dedicate their entire college education towards Health Administration. It is not uncommon for students to seek Master degree programs, and those graduates are finding out that many institutions are putting a large emphasis on hiring graduates holding master degrees in healthcare admin.

Take a look at just a few of the colleges and universities offering Health Administrator programs. Whatever your current education level, you are sure to find a program to suit your educational requirements and desires. Information from these teaching institutions is completely FREE, and can put you on the road to a successful future in Health Administration.
